Single Track in Sioux Falls

After more than a year The Falls Area Singletrack (FAST) project at Leaders Park is just about out of the incubator. The City's Parks Board approved our proposal and agreed to let it go to the neighborhood for public input.

The Parks Department has a website for the project as well.

Last week FAST held an informational meeting for interested people. I had my usual "what if you throw a party and nobody comes?" anxiety and the bike community showed up with five times my minimum expectation.

The day after setting a new Masters World Hour Record at the Home Depot Center velodrome in Carson, CA, Giant Bicycle Inside Sales Representative Keith Ketterer (“KK”) said he was, “a little sore, but totally psyched…and so glad it’s done!” KK set a new World Hour Record in the 50-54 age group, riding 45.386 kilometers – that’s 28.2015 miles – in one hour. The old record was 44.890 kilometers, or 27.8933 miles.

He did it on a 2010 Giant Omnium track bicycle frame constructed from Giant’s ALUXX-SL Grade aluminum and featuring Giant’s Advanced-Grade Composite fork with a full-composite steerer tube. All the components on the bike are from various manufacturers who spec parts on Giant bicycles. “I wanted to involve as many current team sponsors and Giant spec partners as possible, and we succeeded in that,” he said. “In short, my hour bike is an amazing rig. The 53-year old has worked at Giant for almost nine years, and has been named “Inside Sales Rep of the Year” multiple times due to his success at selling the Giant brand. Sioux Falls Greenival

The Sioux Falls Greenival runs today from 10 am till 2 pm. We are there hosting the bike valet. The Greenival is an event for "Green" businesses to be showcased. Not just anyone can be there. You have to prove yourself as green. Spoke-N-Sport is getting more and more green as the time goes by. We now recycle all tires and tubes. We recycle all paper products and cardboard. We also recycle cans and bottles. We are even recycling bikes and bike parts through the Center of Hope. We are hoping to find someone that can take our scrap metal too. Know anyone?

Giant does many things very very well. They have outdone themselves again. Their 29" wheel bikes were a little late to the starting gate but they came some winning technology. Better late then never right? My favorite part about their 29" wheel bikes is the rims that they designed. The rims are a deeper rim than most. It allows for the bike to be built with a shorter spoke which in theory will create a wheel that has less flex. Come see for your self.

The August 2009 issue of Consumers Digest puts two Giant road bikes in the “BEST BUYS” category: the Trinity Alliance 1 and the Defy Advanced 3. Editor Roy Wallack (who has reviewed several Giant bikes for the LA Times) points out about the Trinity Alliance 1: “This model’s aerodynamic frame and mid-to-top level Shimano components (105 and Ultegra) help the Trinity Alliance to blow away other triathlon-specific bikes, which feature a more extreme riding position than road bikes do. You’d have to pay at least $300 more to find a similar combo.” And here’s what he says about the Defy Advanced 3: “This bike delivers the vibration-dampening ride of carbon fiber at a price that would have given a dealer a heart attack 3 years ago. The Advanced 3 is outfitted with either a 20- or 30-speed drivetrain (at the same price) and excellent Shimano components.” The entire five-page article is about advances in technology and design that make bikes more comfortable to ride and in it Wallack gives a shout out to another Giant road bike: “The result is frames that are strong, naturally shock-absorbing and ultralight. Open House Scheduled for Draft MPO Bicycle Plan

An Open House to review and make comments on the first ever Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Bicycle Plan will be Monday June 22, 2009 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Washington High School Commons Area. The MPO plan provides recommendations for bicycle facilities and methods to improve safety and the bicyclist experience throughout the metro area including rural bicycle routes and bicycle trail connections.

Cities and counties included in this plan include Brandon, Crooks, Hartford, Harrisburg, Sioux Falls, Tea, Lincoln County and Minnehaha County.

RoadBikeRider.com sends out an newsletter every week to over 65,000 cyclists (thank you Larry). This week they had a little blurb about H.R. 2105. Here is what they had to say:

Tax deductions for the purchase of bikes and accessories may be coming. U.S. lawmakers have introduced the Personal Health Investment Today Act of 2009 (H.R. 2105) in the House of Representatives. The bill calls for deductions of up to $1,000 per year for expenses used to stay physically fit and active. Qualifying would be health club memberships, personal instruction and some equipment used for exercise, probably including bicycles. The impetus for the bill is a World Health Organization study that says a $1 investment in physical activity would reduce medical expenses by $3.20 in the U.S., and 2 out of 5 Americans would increase exercise if offered a financial incentive.

I am just going to throw this out there but is it maybe possible that the people that do exercise really enjoy it and therefore spend money on the things they enjoy. Has the WHO priced a custom Independent Fabrications bike lately? I do hope that it does work as an incentive for those that are on the fence needing something to push them over.

Bike Trail Construction with Alternate Route

The greenway trail from Fawick Park south to the railroad tracks will be reconstructed beginning on Friday May 27th. The trail will be reconstructed and realigned including a wider 12 foot trail. During construction 3rd Avenue and 12th Street back to the trail will be used as on-street alternate routes (see attached map for alternate route). The trail is expected to reopen by July 10th. Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Beginning Monday, May 11, 2009, ongoing construction of Phase 3—Segment 1 of the Central Main Sanitary Interceptor Sewer Project will require the closure of the bike trail in the area of North Riverside Avenue. Construction activity will require the bike trail to be closed for 24 hours, starting the morning of May 11. A hard surface will be restored prior to reopening. There will be no through-traffic allowed between the diversion channel bridge near North Drive and Falls Park Drive. The bike trail will be closed from Monday morning, May 11, until Tuesday morning, May 12, 2009. Minger Construction is the prime contractor.

I had the priviledge to work with the Bike Trail Advisory Committee over the last few years. Last night we decided to conduct our meeting on the road. We thought it would be a good experience to ride the alternate routes that will be necessary for those using the bike trail during the upcoming work on the river on the west side of the bike trail. Riding on city roads will be a new experience for some. For others it will be another day just like the rest. Hopefully by the end of this project we will have some more bike lanes in the city. Sioux Falls is very fortunate to have a bike trail that surrounds the whole city. It is a trail that gets lots of use by local cyclists as well as cyclists in the surrounding communities. With a facility as large as this and with it's proximity to the river there will always be projects that will close portions of the trail for extended periods of time.

This coming summer and into 2010 there will be a portion of the bike trail closed. With any closure there are going to compromises that will put cyclists on different routes. The city is trying their hardest to reroute trail users safely and easily. They have set up a few pages on their website for you to access as needed (see links to right).

A big concern is how the trail will be rebuilt. When the trail is rebuilt it will not be on top of the levee. Instead it will be lower which will cause some safety issues with water runoff in the spring and winter months. This is a hazard to cyclists that use this route year round.

Sam in the city planning department has been doing an awesome job of keeping people informed. Now he is asking for some help from the people that use the trial. He wants feedback from the users of the trail. Sam wants to compile list of comments to present to city hall. The bike trail is an incredible feature of Sioux Falls and this is your chance to to give some feedback. The Flea front and rear commuter lights obviously get their name from their relatively small, flat appearance. But what isn't immediately apparent is how bright these little buggers are—a claimed 40* lumens apiece.

In terms of utility, Blackburn hits the nail right on the head. Even though the Flea lights manage to retain a little bit of molded styling about them, they do so without wasting much material. Both lights come with a simple Velcro strap embedded with a silicone stripe that grips either a handlebar or seatpost. Urgent: Call Your Senators IMMEDIATELY to Protect Bike/Ped Funding

The U.S. Senate is currently voting on a series of amendments to the economic stimulus bill. Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina has introduced an amendment that would prohibit ANY of the over $800 billion in funding be used for bicycling or walking trails or infrastructure-which would include any Safe Routes to School efforts. Senator DeMint said, "When people see bike trails and hiking trails and golf courses, they know this is not designed to stimulate the economy and create jobs."

We do not yet know when or if this amendment will be voted on-but it is critical that we demonstrate that bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure *IS* an important part of the economic recovery and building green infrastructure.

Please call your both Senators as soon as possible. They will be continuing to vote late tonight and possibly into the weekend. Use these talking points:

· I am calling to ask the Senator to vote against the DeMint amendment to prohibit bicycle and pedestrian projects from being funded in the economic recovery bill.
· I also ask you to support explicit funding for bike/ped projects in the final economic recovery bill.
· It takes construction workers and materials to create bicycle and pedestrian, creating jobs at the same or better rate than highway projects
· These smaller projects can move quickly to get local businesses working and help Main Street economies.
· Providing safe and convenient bicycle and pedestrian access to workplaces, schools, and transit gives families cheaper transportation options.
· Improving sidewalks and bike lanes can make downtown a destination, further helping local business and the economy.

The latest salmonella outbreak has made it's way into the bike industry. Powerbar / Nestle seems to have dodged a bullet but Cliff bar is having some recalls to some of their products. Velonews has some info: Cliff Bar PB Recall. We had very few of these products but we received and sold these before there were issues.

Giant Bicycles has also issued a recall for their Giant TCR Advanced SL. There have been some issues of the forks having problems. You can learn the details here: Giant Fork Recall. We have not sold any of these bikes.

Mavic R-SYS Front Wheel Recall

As part of its ongoing commitment to customer safety and satisfaction, Mavic has announced a voluntary recall of its R-SYS front wheels as a precautionary safety measure.

Mavic has identified that the carbon tubular spokes of the R-SYS front wheel may break during use in certain circumstances and causing the rider to lose control and possibly fall, potentially sustaining injury.

All models of Mavic R-SYS front wheels are concerned (R-SYS, R-SYS test, R-SYS Premium), whether purchased separately or as part of a bicycle. The wheels must no longer be used.

Take Action to Increase Bicycling Opportunities in National Parks

The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) has proposed an important rule change that will make it easier for parks to open trails to mountain biking. IMBA urges mountain bikers to register comments in support of the new rule. We have been asking the NPS to make this change since the 1990s — we now enter a 60-day commentary period to make the change official.

We know that several groups are working hard to defeat this proposal. It will take thousands of comments supporting the NPS to ensure the rule is approved. Please lend your voice to the discussion today.

Bicycling broadens recreational offerings in national parks and helps Americans get much-needed exercise. It connects people with the natural world and is a fun, low-impact activity. Observers of national parks worry that the NPS is losing relevance with today's youth — bicycling can help address that problem. Mountain biking is a great way to help kids fall in love with parks. According to the Outdoor Industry Foundation, bicycling is a leading “gateway activity” that gets kids outside and interested in outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, camping and fishing.

Many trails will not be good candidates for bicycle use. IMBA recognizes that bicycling will not be considered in Wilderness Areas or Wilderness Study Areas, and that many historic parks and battlefields will not be suitable for mountain biking. We also know, however, that shared-use trails have proven successful in thousands of locations, including many federally managed parks.

The most promising properties offer a combination of non-Wilderness lands and underutilized facilities that make them good candidates for expanded mountain biking opportunities. IMBA-affiliated clubs can assist the NPS in identifying the best locations for mountain biking. If the local NPS staff agrees an opportunity exists, our clubs stand ready to provide park staff with volunteer resources.

As the proposal explicitly states, none of the NPS procedures for environmental review — or opportunities for public commentary — will be diminished by this rule change. What it achieves is a more manageable system for adopting mountain biking trails. The proposal states, "As a general matter, the proposed rule provides park superintendents with a more efficient and effective way to determine whether opening existing trails to bicycles would be appropriate in the park unit they manage."

Shape Sioux Falls Open House December 17

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: The Shape Sioux Falls initiative will unveil draft land use and development policies that will help shape the community over the next 25 years at an open house scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at the Historic Orpheum Theater, 315 North Phillips Avenue.

Members of the Shape Sioux Falls Review Committee, City of Sioux Falls Planning staff, and consultants with RDG Planning and Design will be available to answer questions.

The draft land use and development policies are a result of eight months of work by a committee of 20 citizens with a goal to help update development and redevelopment policies, including methods that create lively, secure, and distinctive places throughout the community.

These development policies were guided by the results of a visual listening survey completed during the spring. The survey was completed by 1,500 Sioux Falls citizens who rated a series of images used to illustrate various options for development.

The Kinetic Energy Trainer is new to Interbike 2008, and won an “iF” product award at Eurobike in Germany earlier this month where it was previewed at Eurobike. The Kinetic Energy is now available direct from Kurt Kinetic or from the company’s network of retail and distribution partners nationwide.

“Our Kinetic Energy Trainer stayed in R+D longer than most of the products we bring to market,” says Paul Carlsen, Division Manager, Kinetic Cycling. “Because of the vast amount of early interest it received and anticipation from dealers we wanted to ensure it can really handle anything. Shimano Di2 Electronic Shifting: Want it?

I played with it a bit at Interbike this year. It was watched by a Shimano tech pretty closely. I was able to pedal it and shift through a few gears as it hung from a repair stand. I would say that making the derailleur shift is similar to setting a microwave. If you want popcorn you push the popcorn button. If you want to down shift, you push the down shift button. Current versions would be similar to a crosswalk button. You just keep having to push it till the crosswalk sign lights up. Ok, maybe the older stuff doesn't work like that but the Shimano Di2 does shift quickly and it even adjusts quickly too. The biggest reason for this is a simple: input equals output. Current cable systems have lots of opportunity for error. Anytime you have two parts moving over another there will be friction. Friction increases as you add the elements of dirt and rust. Or maybe it's just a case of your housing ends not getting cut cleanly. With Shimano's Di2 you eliminate that because there are no cables. Zip over to Bike Radar to learn a little bit more info.

The editors at Bikeradar.com have tested and reviewed the 2009 Giant Anthem X1, and they have so many nice things to say about the machine that I just can’t understand how Dennis Lane and the rest of the Giant product development team can stay so modest. Bestowing upon the Anthem X1 four-and-a-half stars out of a possible five, editors Guy Kesteven and Steve Worland say things like: "The best combo of low weight, high performance and value we’ve seen so far this year" and “This one makes sense for anyone looking for the maximum bang for their buck.”

But wait, there’s more. “With so much emphasis on carbon composites these days, it’s easy to overlook the fact that aluminum frame construction techniques are getting better too, and Giant is at the leading edge with its ALUXX SL technology.”

Holy cow, how about this next one!?!? “Every single section of the Anthem X frame is a mini-masterpiece of structural engineering.”

Wait. I gotta repeat that one, it’s so good: “Every single section of the Anthem X frame is a mini-masterpiece of structural engineering.”

Commuter Act Becomes Law

After seven years of legislative proposals, the bicycle commuter tax benefit has finally become law. The bill passed both the U.S. House and Senate in early October, and President Bush added his signature on October 3. This legislation allows employers to give employees who commute by bike a monthly tax-free stipend of $20 or less. This benefit is modeled after the federal vanpool and transit commuter tax benefit.
We are grateful to Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR) and other members of Congress who have worked tirelessly to advance this legislation, as well as all the devoted bicycle advocates who helped promote it. Employers may begin reimbursing employees tax-free on January 1, 2009. Stay tuned for details.

A Call For Bike Rack Art

The Sharrows are here! The Sharrows downtown are located on Main and Dakota and are on the left side of the one way streets to avoid the “door zone” in many situations. Those sharrows were put in last week. Sharrows were also put in on West 22nd Street yesterday. Also, check out the completed dedicated bicycle lane on East 41st Street. Lastly, the shared bicycle/parking lane has been repainted on Bahnson. Please pass on the word and let me know what you think of them. Thanks.

We Helped and It's Working (or give them bikes and they will ride)

At the beginning of Augustana's school year they unveiled their Green program. Part of that program is having 10 bikes available for students to get around campus or even go off campus to run errands. Spoke-N-Sport is a proud sponsor of this program. As I move around town you will be noticing them from place to place. This is one that was parked out in front of Hy Vee. The kids are loving the bikes. Spoke-N-Sport was very excited to be involved in this program.

Energy Legislation - Take Action

We understand that the United States Senate may vote on an energy legislation package this week, (The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 ), which will provide a number of incentives to promote clean energy sources. The Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008, also includes the bicycle commuter tax benefit provision, previously introduced by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR). The provision provides for qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement for such reasonable expenses incurred by an employee for the purchase of a bicycle, bicycle improvements, repair, and storage. The Senate is expected to vote on this legislation either tomorrow Thursday, September 18, or Friday, the 19th. The bicycle trail between 41^st and 49^th Street will be open this weekend. The flood control levy project is complete.

The trail between 12^th Street and Russell Street will be closed from September 8^th to September 29^th to complete a repaving project. Look Keo Pedal Recall

On Tuesday, August 5th, LOOK issued a recall announcement for all LOOK KEO chromoly axle models manufactured prior to January 2006. The axle could potentially crack and break, posing a fall hazard. NOTE: The recall does not include Carbon Ti, HM Ti or other LOOK pedals.

East 41st Street Parking to be Removed
and Bicycle Lane to be Added

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: The City of Sioux Falls will be adding a bicycle lane on both sides of East 41st Street from Southeastern Avenue to the Harmodon Park entrance—41st Street has been recently asphalt-resurfaced from Bahnson Avenue to SD Hwy 11. Temporary raised pavement markers will be placed as a part of a resurfacing project on East 41st Street.
In the next month, permanent lane striping will be completed including a five-foot dedicated bicycle lane on both sides of 41st Street. To facilitate adding the bicycle lanes, on-street parking will be removed on both sides of East 41st Street between Southeastern Avenue and Sycamore Avenue.
In addition, 41st Street from Sycamore Avenue to SD Hwy 11 will be changed from a two-lane section with a continuous turn lane to a two-lane section with a five-foot dedicated bike lane on both sides of 41st Street.
These changes are being implemented as recommended in the City of Sioux Falls Bicycle Plan.

Bikes for Kids

Spoke-N-Sport Had the opportunity to help provide over 30 new bikes for kids at Laura B. Anderson Elementary School last week. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers bought the bikes and with the help of Giant Bicycles, and Spoke-N-Sport. The parents were almost as excited as the kids. We need more kids on bikes.

Recently I was fortunate enough to visit Portland and attend the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. I think I posted about it last week if the title of this blog is correct. When I was there I visited w/ a friend of mine that relocated to Vancouver, WA over 10 years ago. Even though he is not a cyclist but loves macs I still consider him a really good friend. It didn't take too long before I had to bring up cycling and how cyclists seemed to fit in to traffic very well. They do have bike lanes but even in Portland, OR there are places that don't have bike lanes. He said that it took awhile but after a couple months he began to realize cyclists were just another part of traffic. It wasn't car against bike, motor against human power but everyone fighting to get to work on time or get their kids to a soccer game or cello lessons. Bikes, cars, motorcycles, semi-trucks, Fords, Chevys and even 1996 Buick Roadmasters are all part of traffic. We all move as one. After time he realized that he had to look for all traffic. Not just motorized vehicles but everyone that is on the road. We all have the right to use the roads. As cyclists we don't have any more rights than a motorist.

North American Handmade Bicycle Show 2008

The second week in February was the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Portland, OR. I was fortunate to be able to go this year. It was certainly not what I expected. I had never been to Portland but if you haven't heard already, this is an excellent town to bike in.

At the show I was able to see a Sioux Falls native (Eric w/ GroundUp) with some of his latest creations. I also got to see one of my favorite custom frame companies (IF bikes). There certainly were a lot of companies that were new to me (Jones Bikes) as well. One thing I really liked about the show was seeing builders use a wide variety of color. Colors were even accented with misc. colored bike parts. I have put together a gallery for you to see all the pictures I took. You can get to that here.

Sheldon Brown

Baseball players have Babe Ruth, golfers have Tiger Woods, bike mechanics have Sheldon Brown. I have never met Sheldon Brown but I have seen him at various trade shows. He's one of those people that you just can't miss even in a crowd of people. He will alway be one of my favorite mechanics.

NEWTONVILLE, MA (BRAIN)—Sheldon Brown, who could explain the intricacies of 40-year-old Sturmey Archer hubs with the same patient clarity with which he would explain suspension or integrated shifters, died from a sudden heart attack Sunday night. His death was unrelated to the progressive multiple sclerosis that had kept him off his bikes since September 2006. Most bicyclists encountered Brown through his technical writing on the Harris Cyclery Web site, www.harriscyclery.com, where he was webmaster and general tech guru for the West Newton, Massachusetts retailer.

In his book, Ratey cited a 2007 study that showed cognitive flexibility - our ability to shift thinking and produce a steady flow of creative thoughts and answers (as opposed to a regurgitation of the usual responses) - improves after just one 35-minute treadmill session at either 60 percent or 70 percent maximum heart rate. The researchers had 40 adults (age 50 to 64) rattle off alternative uses for common objects like a newspaper. Half of them watched a movie and the other half exercised. They were tested before the session, immediately after and again twenty minutes later. The movie watchers showed no change, but the runners improved their processing speed and cognitive flexibility after just one workout. “So if you have an important afternoon brainstorming session scheduled, going for a short, intense run (or ride) during lunchtime is a good idea” Ratey wrote. Other studies also showed that exercise will reduce stress, lift your mood, and fight memory loss.

The impact of this research is potentially huge. Just think, some day it may be commonplace for businesses to encourage even top executives to ride to work so they are sharper and more creative when they get there, or when kids diagnosed with ADD ride to school rather than take Ritalin. Every bike we sell is making someone’s life better.
